Matchmaking Sunday

Monday, November 20th, 2006

rose It has been a long, long time since I go and find cha bo already. But today, my really good secondary friend, Khoo Kay Tiong, just called me up and told me to have dinner at his place. The catch was… of course… a pretty girl to introduce to me. Hmmm… well, honestly, I am really scared of such things… ‘cos the last time I got introduced to a girl like this… I was so horrified by her that I almost ran away. The guy who introduced that girl was Mr Teo Kai Guan (yeah… I specially mentioned his name so that in the unlikely event that someone volunteers to match make for you… and his surname begins with Teo…. be careful… he might have good intentions, but it sure does not make up for his bad tastes)

Anyway, I had to meet this girl as my friend’s fiance actually claimed that she will make me go oo-oo-ah-ah when I do see her. I have to take a peek at Ms Oo-oo-ah-ah no matter what.

Quotation Website + Mass Participation Concept

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

I am getting really intrigued by the power of the masses.  In fact, my future business concept will rely heavily on it.  Not sure if it will work, but will definitely let u guys know.  I think the most impressive present day example is Wikipedia.  It is just not fathomable that a world of collaborators can actually come together and build an encyclopedia more comprehensive than the Britannica.

Democracy is about giving choice to the masses.  It is an amazing political system that has enabled great advances in our modern society.  Imagine providing a platform for masses to collaborate.  Surely… that will be something mind boggling.

Anyway, just chanced on a really dumb idea.  (BTW, do want to solemnly apologise that most of my ideas here are IT based).  I guess the reason is because I am after all an IT man…. and so… errr…

I used to buy a book of quotation to refer to… and i really like it when they classified each quote according to some category, i.e. courage, success, etc….  Then i remember the flickr concept.  Surely if we allow people to upload quotations based on tags… and the tag cloud concept… it might be another long tail idea.

However, just not too sure how to monetize it……

Use Liquor/Brandy to Subsidise your Travel

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

wine I was just thinking about how “kiasu” Singaporeans always buy their fill of liqour and wine when they are coming back from the travel. I believe that a lot of them buy because of being “kiasu” rather than for actual consumption. I am one of them. Since army days, I have bought this stupid XO and till now, I have yet to consume it.

With the recent hike in GST… to 7%…. I am even more tempted to buy… (or am I wrong? do u get charged GST in airport? Shouldn’t right?)
Since everybody is entitled to 2 bottles of wine and brandy when coming back to Singapore. Why not set up a system that let people have a chance to sell their wine at a price > duty free but < market price. There seems to exists an arbitrage opportunity. In fact, it can be tied in with travel packages… and the profit… can be used to subsidise the air tickets. Why? It might even make travelling on Tiger Airways free!

And better still! People can state exactly what kind of wine, electronic goods that they will like…..

Currently, I think only will work for wine and cigarettes with very high taxes! But if GST one day becomes like VAT, 21%… who knows?

Alex Lim from New Shan Travel

Friday, November 10th, 2006

Oh yes.. before I forget, I also spoke to Alex Lim from New Shan Travel.  Well, he is the IT manager of New Shan.  Wanted to learn a bit more about the travel industry from him too.  From what I understand, New Shan will be rolling out their own internal Hotel Booking system by January.  It should be just a normal database with no integration with external system.

I’ve been made to understand that Octopus marks up 35% while New Shan intends to compete by marking up only 25% of the base hotel fare.  Also, it seems that they will be getting the hotel bookings directly from a mother company, TravelPort.

Hmmm… really confusing… maybe it is going to take some time to learn about this industry after all….

Anyway, my nice X boss, whose wife is also working in the travel industry promises to help me fish out some information.  Lets hope it helps me along in this rocky path of being an entrepeneur.

Travel Industry in Australia

Friday, November 10th, 2006

Well, i was talking to a potential client introduced to me by Juliana from Travelex.  Her name is sue.  Currently, she is working in a travel agency in Australia.  I was really hesitant on the deal as I understand the importance of having the necessary after sales support in an IT system.  It will be very difficult for me to give her the necessary servicing once the system goes operational while she is in Australia.

In the end, to mitigate her risks, I suggested that she wait a little and look at some of my upcoming travel portals before deciding.  Yeap… :P   Already got a few deals all set in place!

But anyway, that is the important thing about this story.  Today, just wanted to document down important notes of the industry.  (Yes.. i am an avid learner… one of the most interesting things I find in this world… is to learn about how real business operates…. and from… find out some kind of opportunity?)

SIMILARITIES (to Singapore)

Reservation and booking engine – uses Abacus, Galileo, Amadeus to do the backend reservation and booking.

Trafalgar -  International seller of special trafalgar packages.  Should be similar to Starcruise, Clubmed, etc…

DIFFERENCES

Concorde International – Seems to be a wholesaler of Air Fare.  Sounds like the New Shan in Singapore terms.  However, they seem to be more IT savvy in the sense that they allow their travel agents to see the fares online.  They also have the relevant interface for travel agents to integrate this fare checking facility to their website.  Hmmm… maybe New Shan has got something to learn from Concorde International…

Calypso -  A portal holding all the possible package tours of major agencies which provide the packages…  (hmmm… does singapore have something like this?  hehe… maybe got opportunity…)  Sue did a demo.. but the system really sucks… slow and troublesome… and just jia lat.  :P

Starting Out Is Always Difficult

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

Starting out is honestly difficult. I really think so. Not just in business but in almost everything. I still remember Reebok’s advertisement sometimes back…. in contained a tagline that went:

A body in motion tends to be in motion. A body at rest tends to be at rest.

Well… i can attest to that. Just starting this blog alone took over a month. It was not exactly because I’m lazy, but rather, its like… there are just so many things to do in one’s personal life… that we are in a constant mode of “finding time for things”.

I guess everybody has heard of the saying that “if we really want something done, it will be done”. I must admit that there is some truth in the statement, but in all honesty, I deeply suspect that in the midst of getting that something done, other important things are some what neglected, i.e. going out with friends, having a relaxing coffee break at the kopitiam opposite your house, etc…. (Incidentally, I love drinking at the Kopi Tiam opposite my house…. especially at my favourite table underneath the big oak tree… or just big tree…. not clear what specie it is…)

In the midst of getting this blog done, I went throught the following steps/hassle:

  • Finding a domain name
  • Setting up wordpress
  • Setting up flickr plugin
  • Thinking of the first article
  • Still thinking…. blank…
  • Still thinking…. GOT IT!
  • Snapping the right pictures
  • Figuring how to download into my PC (after losing the USB cable)
  • Tada! Writing this page!

Anyway, what did all the brainstorming got me? Hehe…. we all know how important advertising is…. so to promote the blog, I have just spent $xxxxxx and placed Taxi ads all over Singapore! Check out my ads below. :P

Man… took me 3 shots to finally get a good one. Talk about effort… and difficulty of getting things started….. :P BTW, I think i just realised a typo. It should have ran “The friendliest blog in town”… but come on… everybody makes mistakes… :P I’m sure everybody will understand…
In school, I learn all about setting goals and objectives. So in the typical engineering fashion, let me just clarify the objectives of this blog before getting started!

MAIN OBJECTIVE

  • To discuss new business ideas… that just comes knocking into your head in the middle of the night. (I am thinking of giving access rights to both my good friends Ryan and Chuenyang also… just in case.. they want a platform to just knock some good ideas over… without bothering with actually setting up a blog site….)
  • To share my insights upon certain books. (Yes.. i am a book addict. Literally… you can definitely see some write-ups soon…. even if there aren’t, it is definitely not because I am not reading… it is more probable and accurate to say that I am not writing to the blog. (As usual, if any of my friends will like to share their book reviews… pls feel free to let me know… highly unlike though… ’cause most of them are busy with wives…. sigh….)
  • Let people know about myself. I find blogs an incredibly efficient ways of letting people know what the heck you are doing. I mean… everytime i call Herry, the questions start off with “Free for badminton?” instead of “How have u been doing?” and the reason is because of his blog!

SECONDARY OBJECTIVE

  • Kiasu! Snap up a good name first! I have recently seen more and more housing agents snapping up domain names to set up their own personal website. So my guess is… better get started before it is too late!
  • Pray that while somebody is looking for a home loan or james bond movie, they will just chance upon me! (I am definitely too broke to help you with the loan, but if you are looking for tha latter, a handsome hunk, I might just come in handy. :P )
