Sunday, June 29th, 2008SI Systems and Products
Saturday, June 28th, 2008In the computer services industry (Software), there tend to be 2 type of software developments. Customized System Integration(SI) projects and Software Products. SI Projects are one off customized solution developed to suit a particular business need. They tend to range in the thousands of dollars as the system is only sold once. Most consumers will only come into contact with such software at their work place. Software Products on the other hand refer to things like your Microsoft Windows. After developing the product, many copies of it are made to be sold to the rest of the world.
Generally, Customized Systems not only costs more, but also tend to be of lower quality. Quality issues creep in as they are not tested with a large enough user base. It is not surprising to discover new bugs in the software even after it has been commissioned and running for over a year…. And that’s where lucrative maintenance contracts creep in….
Software Products on the other hand tend to be widely tested by their user base. Recently, I had to pick up the loose ends of a project and could not be more disgusted by the development efforts of one of my developers…. It was a Joomla application, done with no regards to the Joomla framework. Darn… looks like there will be heck of a lot of work for me to touch up….
For those of you who are familiar with Joomla, read on… for other more ordinary folks… please ignore this…
Amazing Developer
Saturday, June 28th, 2008
Today, just met an amazing developer. Honestly, I did not really think I will meet someone of that caliber in a country like Pakistan. I mean… my intention of coming to customer was to find labour to handle simple projects.
Never did I expect to chance upon another AJAX genius – somewhat like the Chuen Yang I knew. Well, the guy built up a full scale AJAX desktop environment complete with windowing features, etc. It looked just like Google Ajax API… just that it was custom made… and they did it on PHP.

Battle between QuickCam Pro 9000 and Microsoft LifeCam VX-1000
Tuesday, June 10th, 2008Hmmm… if you have been following my blog, you will realise that I am trying to set up an offshore development office in Pakistan. The problem with Pakistan is that their electronic gadgets are a far cry from what you see in Singapore. Tried to get a Skype certified webcam and failed terribly. BTW, it was reported that Skype worked closely with Logitech to develop some kind of high quality video. had to try it out to see if it just a scam …

That called for a certain amount of personal sacrifice in terms of both time and money…
I popped over to Sim Lim and purchased the following:
- 2 sets of QuickCam Pro 9000 (Costs 179 SGD each.. but bargained to 165 SGD)
- 2 sets of Microsoft LifeCam VX-1000 (Costs 45 SGD each… but bargained to 40 SGD)
