.NET and Java J2EE

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

.NET and Java J2EE I have been looking into .NET recently.  Yes.. I am finally looking.  Was trying to look into .NET for the last couple of years… but was always trying.  Finally, when a person gets stuck in Pakistan with no movies, no bridge, no friends for coffeeshop chats, he has time to do some serious investigation into software technologies…

I think this point is pretty obvious.. I mean.. just look at the number of articles I have written recently.  Scary really.  Anyway, this will be a constantly updated article.  Why constantly updated?

Well, for the simple reason that I am not exactly looking at mastering .NET within a day or two.. and this is intended to be some sort of a journal for me to note down the difference between the 2 frameworks.  I am pretty familiar with Java J2EE… so I should be able to point out the difference along the way….

Stay tuned. :P

CSS Styling to create Image Border and Shadow

Monday, July 28th, 2008

CSS Image Border and Shadow If you look at the picture on the left, you will realise that it has a white border with a shadow.  Well, was digging around some of the open source tools when I realised that this effect can be generated via javascript alone!

If you are keen to check out how it is done, click here.

I was just raving about some very cool javascript gallery effects yesterday… and was about to work on a Joomla component to showcase such things… when I realized that it was already done.  The company was JoomlaWorks and wanted to charge 12 Euros for their Simple Image Gallery which was an amalgamation of 5 Litebox like effects.  Hehe… it was only then that I realised that LiteBox had 5 clones:

Anyway, if you are interested in finding out how they compare to Litebox, read on….

Server Side Conversion of Video Files to SWF Format

Monday, July 28th, 2008

FFMPEG Window Binaries If you have read my previous article on video streaming, you will have noted that most of the popular video broadcasting sites broadcast in Flash flv format.  Of course, there are some freeware on the net which allows you to convert different video formats to flv… but nothing beats server side conversion to SWF format….

I mean.. just take a peek at you tube.  Surely, you dun see them asking you to convert your video to FLV format before uploading to their side?

Playing Videos on the Web

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

image Well, needed to find out how this video streaming actually works… so had to do some research. Well, as usual, I consulted one of my favorite weskits, How Stuff Works. Yeap.. it is one of my favorite as it explains to you things in lay man terms… and we all know how difficult it is… to explain geeky stuff in non-geeky language.

Anyway, for those of you who are wondering, here is the link:

Joomla Expose Configuration

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Expose 4 Configuration  If you are familiar with Joomla, you might have heard of Expose.  Well, if you would like to use it out-of-the-box, it will be great.  Trouble is, sometimes you just need to do some touch-ups to fit into your Joomla template.  And then you get into problems.  Suddenly, you come face to face with a monstrous configuration file with no idea of where to start.

Well, being really desperate, I slowly dissected the file and got the following 8 sections, with 2 no idea sections.

  • Gallery
  • Main Panel
  • Image
  • Image Strip
  • Image Info
  • Album List
  • Album Info
  • Image Description

Integrating Gmail with your Corporate POP email accounts

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

image You know… I never really appreciated Gmail until I got stuck in Pakistan.  I had a server hosted in Singapore data center.  Access to emails were always at a blazingly fast speed… that was until I got stuck in Pakistan for a couple of months (for business reasons)….

Then, it got really irritating.  Due to the poor network problems, checking email became a chore.  It was like lottery.  50% of the time you get your mails, the other 50% of the time… bad luck bro… .and so it remained until I discovered that Gmail allowed you to interface to POP accounts

Basically Gmail can be used to both receive and send your emails!  It can be the web-based front end to your traditional POP email accounts!

Migrating the Word Press Blog

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

image I never had any trouble with the WordPress Blog until recently.  Needed to migrate the blog to localhost to do some quick skinning when I realise how problematic that could be.  One of the problems with WordPress is that they tend to use full url links instead of relative links.  As such, the simple direct transfer of files and database dump just will not do.  Needed to do some direct tweaking on the database.

Thank god there were some helpful souls at:

The Shape Shifter – Mr Faisal Shah

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Faisal Shah - Pakistan

I was watching the series Heroes.  It talked about human beings having super natural prowess due to their genetic combinations.  Within the series, there was a girl who could magically change her appearance and surroundings.  Sometimes, she could be a really hot chick while the next moment she can transform to a maternal grandmother.  I call her – The Shape Shifter (Heroes Style).

Recently, I had the honor to meet another Shape Shifter (Pakistan Style).  And yes.. you are right… he is that person on the left…. Mr Faisal Shah from Pakistan.

Also, if you notice, I have purposefully highlighted Faisal Shah and Pakistan and refrained from using a generic term like he, a person, etc…  This is my most carefully Search Engine Optimized article on Mr Faisal Shah from Pakistan.  Even the image tags have alt text pointing to Mr Faisal Shah.

Any readers of this blog, feel free to link to this article with important keywords like Faisal Shah and Pakistan to further boost its ranking.
